Always Remeber
- Read the adhesive directions prior to commencing.
- Take your time. Do each section accurately and the job should look professionally done.
- There are special adhesives for various applications.
Getting Ready
- Find the lowest point in the floor and mark one tile high from the floor.
- Nail a straight batten along this mark. Ensure that the level of the batten is horizontal.
- Set the tiles across the wall so that equal tile cuts can be made at either end. Mark the wall at the edge.
Laying Tiles
- Read the instructions printed on the adhesive.
- Spread the recommended adhesive onto the wall hung using the appropriate notched trowel. Notches run across the wall.
Flat Backed Tiles Use 6mm square notched trowel
Lugged Tiles Use 10mm square notched trowel
Slate Use 12mm square notched trowel
- Spread only 1 square metre at a time.
- Start fixing the tiles from the marked edge along the batten.
- Press the tiles into position ensuring there is approximately 80% of the back of the tile in contact with the adhesive.
- Continue applying sufficient adhesive to the wall and laying the tiles. Also ensuring that the level is maintained both vertically and horizontally.
- Even spacing can be achieved by using spacers or wedges.
- Once all the full tiles have been laid, the cut tiles should then be laid. These are normally adhered into position by buttering the adhesive onto the back of the tile and then laid into position.
Cutitng tiles is now a simple operation as there is a large number of tile cutters available. Ask your tile retailer what he recommends. Often tiles can be cut at the shop or you can hire cutting machines for larger jobs.
- Once the adhesive has set, the batten can be removed at the bottom row of tiles laid.
Grouting
- 24 hours after laying the tiles, grouting can be commenced.
- Grout using ASA white grout or one of 26 ASA coloured grouts.
- Mix the grout in accordance to the directions of the bag. Where the grout needs to be flexible, have lower porosity or that added safeguard against mould growth, additives such as ASA GROUT ADDITIVE can be used instead of water.
- Apply the mixed grout over the face of the tiles using a rubber squeegee. The grout should be worked well into the joints.
- Remove excess grout with a damp sponge. The sponge should be rinsed frequently and the water changed regularly.
- Once the grout in the joins harden the cement scale should be removed with a soft cloth.
